Superfood Sunday Supper

public.jpeg

Last night we invited over my oldest brother and his wife for a healthy(ish) summer Sunday supper. It was filled with produce or “superfoods” as they’re called in the food world.

The menu was:

-Lacy cheese appetizer

-Steak on the grill (I know this is not a superfood but it does start with an “s”…)

-Sliced Farmers Market tomatoes, with sliced red onion, basil, and Italian vinaigrette and blue cheese crumbles

-Corn on the cob

-Roasted onions

-Mixed Berry Crumble

This recipe is delicious and so easy. Just one ingredient and it’s from the book Pam Anderson’s Recioes for having people over. It was terrific with the La Crema Pinot Noir my brother brought (and which was also on my “Summer Wines” blog last week!).

The roasted onions were from the Barefoot Contessa cookbook Barefoot Contessa at Home. I assembled this dish early in the day and cooked it right before dinner.

This mixed berry crumble is unbelievable! I used strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Delicious!

The table was inspired by summer! Several years ago my hubby and I went to Provence and purchased several tablecloths. This is my favorite in that it’s classic Provençal colors of red, blue and yellow (here’s a similar one https://amzn.to/2QqDG6n). All I added were small mason jars (https://amzn.to/2Qaw6wr) of geraniums, red cotton gingham napkins (Pier One), William Sonoma cream plates, sunflower salad plates (mine are old, here are similar ones https://amzn.to/32HBx7g), and red tumblers (Homegoods) (here are even cuter oneshttps://amzn.to/2LxC6eg). The oval rattan placemats are from Amazon https://amzn.to/2LQ4XcB. They’re worth the money because they’ll last forever, are easy to wipe and look great in many different types of table settings. Wasn’t it a happy tablescape?

Summer Sunday Supper

public.jpeg

This past Sunday night my hubby and I had my husband’s brother and family over for dinner.

The menu: Charcuterie platter for appetizers. I purchased a Brie with apricot and a Manchego cheese at the Farmers Market. I added fig and ginger jam from Stonewall Kitchen that I ordered from Amazon. I used an assortment of crackers. The cornichons were from the grocery store. They’re neat because they have a little plastic basket in the jar which allows you to retrieve the gherkins without the juice.

For the entrees we had brats and lamb burgers, nectarine and scallion salad, pesto with cherry tomatoes and grilled veggies.

The table was a cute rooster print tablecloth over which I layered rattan oval placemats (Amazon https://amzn.to/2LxOcUU), and https://amzn.to/2O23d2Pred cotton gingham napkins (Amazon ). For the flowers I used Coke bottles that I spray painted white filled with summer blooms from my yard.

I wore a white cotton beaded tunic from Talbot’s, white cotton ankle pants from Sara Campbell and very fun pink tassel earrings from Amazon https://amzn.to/2LSSQvr (who knew?). Lastly I wore my new favorite madras espadrilles from Talbot’s. The colors in the madras exactly match the colors in the beading of the tunic. I love when that happens, don’t you?

A Lovely Summer Shower

public.jpeg

Today I went to a bridal shower for my son’s best friend’s fiancée. It was held at the Evanston Golf Club which ironically is located in Skokie (a northern suburb of Chicago). The weather was perfect and the upstairs dining room overlooked the beautiful golf course. The food was delicious. The menu consisted of a mixed greens salad with an Italian vinaigrette, two different types of quiche, hard rolls, and a medley of various fruit sorbets for dessert. The favor was a darling bridal gown shaped iced cookie.

I wore a black and white polka dot jumpsuit with a self belt from Banana Republic. I topped it with a white pique gold buttoned jacket (also from Banana). I wore tobacco suede block heeled sandals from Sam Edelman and my purse was straw with a tobacco leather handle. My pearl necklace was from my mom as was my gold bangle.

For the gifts I wrapped them in gray and white striped paper(Homegoods) and then tied on white tulle ribbon (Amazon). Then for a final touch I added white silk roses and ivy (Pier One) because I found out that these were the flowers for the wedding. Just a little preview of the coming attraction of their upcoming Fall wedding. I can’t wait!

Black and White Dinner in Greensboro

public.jpeg

When I visited my brother last week in Greensboro, Georgia he mentioned he wanted to invite some friends over for dinner.  I asked what he would like me to make he said how about an appetizer, a salad, a side, and a dessert?  I laughed and said it was a good thing I like to entertain and thank goodness for the Internet as I don’t travel with my recipes!

Early in the day we made the Lacy Cheddar Crisps.  We also put store bought olives on a beautiful glass tray that the guests had brought. For the salad we made the dressing, sliced up the hard-boiled egg, and chopped up the bacon. We sliced the tomatoes and seasoned them with the olive oil and Italian seasoning. We made the batter for the dessert and popped it into the frig.

We set the table with black cotton placemats and added black and white paisley dish towels that we found at a cute store in Madison, Georgia.  This all coordinated with the black and white buffalo checked chairs and white lacquered table.  Once we saw the completed table we decided to “dress the part” of a black and white dinner.  My brother and his lovely girlfriend dressed in black and white shorts and tops.  I wore a black and white animal print tunic from White House Black Market (old) with black leggings. I wore black leather sandals by Beautifeet.

My brother grilled the steaks and while he was doing that we reheated the dressing and assembled the salad.  (My brother had cooked the tomatoes while we were out shopping.). We took the batter out of the frig and poured it into white paper cupcake liners to bake off after dinner.

The dinner was a success and fun was had by all!

New Mom Visit

My nephew’s wife just had a darling baby boy and I went to meet him.  Because I’ve been in California all winter this was my first chance to meet the new family addition.

Whenever I go to a new mom’s house I love to bring an easy prepared meal, a baby gift and big sibling gift if applicable.

So I prepared a frittata with red pepper, onion, and gruyere cheese.  I added a loaf of multigrain bread, a package of baby spinach (with a lemon to squeeze over), and brownies (from a mix).

For the baby gift I brought my favorite one: Baby Gap overalls, a cute onesie to wear under it and coordinating socks.  For the big sister I brought several mini bottles of bubble bath from Bath and Bodyworks.

The growing family was wonderful and happy to have fun treats!  The baby loved the tulle bow on the package and the navy tissue paper!  There’s nothing like the giggle of a little one to brighten your day!
